Come along to Seend Lock Open Weekend.
Come and join us at the bottom of Seend Lock and learn about the history at the heart of the Kennet and Avon Canal.
Please wear sensible footwear i.e. wellies, trainers or flat shoes. Dogs are welcome but will not be allowed in the locks. There will be a space to leave bikes and buggies. Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult to go in the locks. Unfortunately, the lock is not suitable for wheelchairs.
One of the Kennet & Avon Canal’s construction teams will be undertaking major works at Seend Lock 18 for a period of six weeks. The work will involve replacing both sets of gates and balance beams which have reached the end of their working life. To enable these works the lock will be drained and cleared of silt.
Whilst the gate replacement is underway, other repairs to brickwork and lock gears will be carried out. Each of the larger gates weigh almost three tonnes and therefore a 60 tonne crane will be on site along with other major equipment used for pumping out a quarter of a million litres.
