Come along and see Foxton Locks as you've never seen them before at our Open Weekend.
See Foxton Locks as you have never seen them before, without water. Venture down into the bottom of the chambers and see how a staircase of locks differs from our traditional style locks. Foxton Locks share bottom and top gates.
See the remains of the historic Inclined Plane – once a lift for wider boats to get to the top of the hill. Find out about the history of Foxton at the Boiler House Museum. Nearby you can grab a drink from the Lock Keepers Cottage Café or visit one of the canalside pubs.
Additionally, there will be lots of other activities for visitors. Please come back and check this page in the coming months to see other activities which will be added to the event.
Foxton is a busy staircase of locks on the Grand Union Canal, over 4,000 boats travel through each year so it’s important that they are kept in tip top condition. Our specialist teams will be tackling the huge job of repairs and maintenance to the UK’s longest and steepest staircase flight of locks. Alongside repairs we will be fitting brand new gates at locks 8,9,15 and 16.
Please wear sensible footwear i.e. trainers or flat shoes. Dogs are welcome but will not be allowed in the locks. There will be a space to leave bikes and buggies. Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult to go in the locks. Unfortunately, the locks are not suitable for wheelchairs, however there is a top viewing platform nearby (see visitor guide for a map) which is suitable for wheelchairs.
