There will be children’s activities, a chance to learn all about the new lock gates that have been fitted and see special performances from the Royal Armouries team in the lock. And while you're at it, visit the Royal Armouries right next to the lock (there's a great view into the lock from the museum staircase!).

What you need to know

  • Please wear sensible footwear i.e. trainers or flat shoes
  • Dogs are welcome but will not be allowed in the locks
  • There will be a space to leave bikes and buggies
  • Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult

The works

Lock 1 hasn’t been drained for over 30 years, so there is a lot of exploring to be done. After the lock has been drained, our team will look at just what needs doing and remove the silt at the bottom. The construction team will also be replacing the huge gates, being made at Stanley Ferry workshop in Wakefield.
