Unlocking Hidden Stories is now live

Following a delayed start due to Covid-19 we are delighted to announce the launch of Unlocking Hidden Stories, a project exploring the stories embedded within the objects held within our collection.

Throughout the project we will asking staff, volunteers and visitors to select items from our collection which inspire memories and recollections that will help us better understand the objects in our care and there relevance today.

We have recruited Jenine McGaughran, a curator and project manager who is leading this project. She is currently reaching out to colleagues, volunteers and friends to discover some of these untold stories. Jenine is looking for stories that hold personal relevance, they may have instigated a passion for canal history, a fascination with the landscapes and environments of the waterways, these stories might be inspired by an item that is essential to daily life and work. What is important is our human connection with the items and their relevance to our lives today.

Jenine is currently busy organising a range of events, including behind the scenes collection tours and object handling days that enable staff, volunteers and visitors to gain better access to the collection, particularly items that are rarely on display.

Unlocking Hidden Stories is also commissioning a creative response to our collections, asking an artist to work with communities and audiences at the National Waterways Museum in Ellesmere Port to explore and experience the collection in new and engaging ways. More information about this will be released in the coming weeks.

On launching the project Jenine said,

"I am delighted to be working with the Canal & River Trust to discover and tell some of the personal stories inspired by items in the collection. Unlocking Hidden Stories is an incredible opportunity to explore the vast collection of items currently in the care of the museums team. I am looking forward to drawing on the expertise of staff, volunteers and visitors to find out more about the artefacts we care for and finding new, innovative ways of sharing these stories."

We are currently seeking submissions to the project, if you or someone you know has an exciting story to share please contact Jenine on jenine.mcgaughran2@canalrivertrust.org.uk.
