Bags of help from Tesco

Our ‘Give a Bat a Home’ project is set to benefit from the 5p carrier bag charge, thanks to Tesco’s Bags of Help programme.

Soprano Pipistrelle Bat

'Give a Bat a Home' is an exciting new project, which provides local spaces for bats to roost along the 2200 miles of our waterway network. It forms part of our first ever national bat monitoring scheme, which helps to protect the species by working with local community groups to install roosts and monitor increases in bat populations.

Tesco has teamed up with Groundwork to launch its Bags of Help initiative across hundreds of regions in England & Wales. The scheme will see three community group and projects in each region awarded grants of £5,000, £2,000 and £1,000 – all raised from the 5p bag charge.

Voting

From 1 – 31 January you’ll be able to vote in selected stores for the ‘Give a Bat a Home’ project, and determine whether it should receive the £5,000, £2,000 or £1,000 awards.

There has never been a scheme that has monitored the population of bats connected to the waterways. As well as its impact on the species, it provides an opportunity for local groups, including sailing clubs, bat groups, anglers and volunteers, to be trained to help install and monitor the roosts, increasing their awareness and knowledge of natural heritage within their local community.

How volunteers are involved

Any bat checks, which would include the opportunity for volunteers to learn how to handle bats would be carried out by a licensed bat worker able to train and mentor volunteers. Volunteers would also receive training on how to lead bat walks and interpret and report on the data that is collected as part of the survey.

The project has been nominated six times. You can vote in the following stores:
