South Pennine Moors SSSI
March Haigh Reservoir lies within this very large upland site, which is designated as a Special Area of Conservation due to the mosaic of high quality upland habitats present. It has also been designated a Special Protection Area for the populations of merlin, golden plover and that the site supports.
Vegetation includes blanket bogs dominated by cotton-grass, heath and heather, with crowberry and bilberry also present. The site also contains species rich and acidic flushes, mires and seepage lines, and supports a wide range of upland fauna including birds and invertebrates.
