Cannock Extension Canal SSSI

Cannock Extension Canal SSSI

A short branch of the Wyrley and Essington Canal, the Cannock Extension Canal has one of the richest aquatic plant populations in the West Midlands. Of particular importance is its large population floating water-plantain, a European protected plant for which the site has been designated a Special Area of Conservation.

The canal also hosts good populations of flowering-rush, various pondweeds and at least nine species of dragonfly, including the red-eyed damselfly and the emperor dragonfly.
