Blow Up Bridge

Blow Up Bridge

Officially known as Macclesfield Bridge, Blow Up Bridge gained the nickname when a barge carrying gunpowder blew up underneath it in 1874. Although the bridge was destroyed, its supporting columns were saved and repositioned the 'wrong' way round, so that the rope grooves worn by the horses' towropes can be seen on both the canal and towpath sides.
