For more than 30 years, the Angel Canal Festival has graced the Regent's Canal. It's back for another year, and with more than 8000 people attending last year's, we think this year is set to be the festival's best yet.
This annual one-day festival taking place on 2 September is based around the City Road Lock, Basin and towpath alongside the Regents Canal, also local streets and a park, in Islington, North London.
Held around City Road Lock and City Road Basin on the Regent’s Canal, the event will feature boat trips, craft stalls and live music, offering a host of fun both on the water and the towpath.
This year’s event is a milestone in the festival’s history as the management group (after more than 30 years) is handing over organising responsibilities to us here at the Trust.
Angel Day started in the 1980's by the late Crystal Hale as a fundraising event for the narrow boat 'Angel', used to give inner-city children boat rides and trips into the countryside. In 1986 with the help of event organiser Jim Langdon, the Angel Canal Festival was born.
Years before, Crystal had spearheaded a successful campaign to save the City Road Basin from being filled in and built on. With the help of family, friends, local people and councillors, Crystal started up two clubs on the City Road Basin; the Angel Community Canal Boat Trust (ACCT) and the Islington Boat Club (IBC). Today, the basin is still home to the two thriving clubs who use it extensively for the benefit of thousands of youngsters every year.
For 11 years the festival took place on the first Sunday in September, and become a much-loved event with stalls, a children's fun-fair, live music, boat trips and a boat rally with free admission for all.
In 1998 Crystal became ill. Local groups responded overwhelmingly: St Pancras Cruising Club, London Canal Museum, Friends of Islington Museum, Angel Community Canal Boat Trust, Islington Boat Club, as well as Canal & River Trust.
Crystal died in 1999 aged 84 having left a great legacy. Jim, helped by guide-dog Flint, worked on until his death in 2009.
