National Trust working holiday Stratford on Avon Canal
Sue Blocksidge, Volunteer Development Co-coordinator for West Midlands, was contacted 12 months ago with a request from National Trust to organise a working holiday on the Stratford Canal.
National Trust working holidays was started 50 years ago by two school teachers from Stratford upon Avon and they wanted to celebrate 50 years of National Trust working holidays and asked if something could be arranged back on the Stratford Canal. In those days there were no towpaths and the working party would have actually constructed a towpath. Coincidentally towpath works were required not too far away from where it all began 50 years ago, so this was all arranged and advertised in their holiday brochure.
There were about 15 volunteers from 23 to 25 June, who stayed in a local National Trust property and came to the canal for three days. It was a great event and they were such an enthusiastic bunch who thoroughly enjoyed themselves and really worked hard.
