We love and care for your canals and rivers, because everyone deserves a place to escape.

Your waterways - at the heart of your community

We’re looking for local groups who would love to work with us to make more of their local waterway.

Volunteer rangers on the Chesterfield Canal

If your community group is keen to get more involved with your local canal, river or reservoir, you can submit your ideas for an initial project – and we will support you.

In return, your group will agree to take on volunteering activities to help look after your local waterway. This could be linked to the initial project or another opportunity such as volunteer rangers or a community adoption. Our volunteering pages provide more information on how you can get involved.

What sort of projects will we consider?

Your successful application could include (but should not limited to):

  • Improving local facilities, such as: a new bench along the towpath, a new noticeboard or interpretation panel, or re-surfacing a section of towpath
  • Providing a waterway taster session for a group / community members (eg. guided walks, canoeing, boat trip, cycling or angling)

Don’t be limited by these suggestions – we want to hear your new ideas!

Useful tips

Funding for this scheme is limited so we'll be judging applications on the following:

  • Viability of project / activity – this scheme is intended to support achievable projects, unfortunately we won’t be able to support larger projects such as restoration schemes!
  • Local need / demand – please let us know how your idea has come about, and how your local community will benefit
  • Your relationship with us – this scheme is primarily aimed at encouraging new groups to work with us on an ongoing basis. If you’re already working with us as a partner or adoption group, why not see if you can link with another community group who may have additional ideas for improvements to your local waterway
  • Your contribution to the project – applications that show a clear commitment to the initial project / activity as well as an interest in ongoing volunteering will be prioritised

Key dates for your application

A panel made up of waterway staff, local volunteers and partnership members will judge all applications.

  • Closing date for applications 31 January 2018
  • Successful applicants notified by mid February 2018
  • Initial projects should be completed by 31 March 2018 unless otherwise agreed with us.

You can read the terms and conditions here.
