Our National Advisory Groups provide our management with specialist advice and guidance. The groups help to shape policy and plans, and guides our decisions in the areas of each group's specialism.
The Youth Engagement Advisory Group (YEAG) helps us to understand more fully the wider context of engaging young people. This enables us to plan and deliver effective, innovative programmes, which match the ambitions and aspirations in line with our Youth Engagement Strategy.
Established in November 2013, the group has been a valuable support to us in developing the strategy and helping with the cultural change that this needed within the organisation. In addition, opportunities have been highlighted for joint working, funding streams and recognising the impact for the organisation of policy changes across England and Wales.
The chair and members are appointed by the chief executive and serve for terms of up to three years, although this may be renewed for a second term to a maximum of six years.
The group typically meets three to four times a year in London.
We are now looking for new members to join the group aged between 16 and 24 years old, increasing the capacity of the current advisory group and increasing the young person’s perspective within the group.
Our current membership of the YEAG
We have volunteers in the group who have experience in working with young people and youth engagement including:
The membership of the group is voluntary but agreed expenses are reimbursed. All our volunteers are team players who can work effectively with the rest of the group and management team, acting in the best interests of the waterways rather than to represent any particular interests/cause.

Canal & River Trust actively supports and encourages diversity in all of its advisory and network groups, with a view to ensuring that they are reflective of the wider community and the groups of people that they seek to engage with. Currently, individuals between the ages of 16 and 24 are unrepresented in the Youth Engagement Advisory Group. Therefore, while all applications that meet the above criteria will be considered fairly and reasonably, we would particularly welcome those from individuals who fall within this age range.
