Walking in Birmingham - New Street to the NIA

An easy walk along the canals of Birmingham from New Street to the NIA.

Leave New Street Station via the Navigation Street exit and turn left towards The Mailbox, passing under the bridge decorated with brightly lit lanterns. The decadent shops and restaurants of the old Royal Mail sorting office act as a thoroughfare on your journey.

Walk through The Mailbox and leave crossing the new bridge towards Gas Street Basin. Look out for The Mailbox waterbus as an alternative method of travel.

Continuing forward looking out for the red door in the bridge arch which was used by the fire brigade to pump water from the canals to douse fires during the war.

Walk under Broad Street tunnel and mind your head, the ICC is on your right – you can take a canal trip from outside here.

Go straight ahead, passing the steps which lead into Brindleyplace and the National Sea Life Centre.

Follow the canal round and up the ramp to cross the bridge to The NIA.
