Canal & River Trust says no to Canalival

Recent posts on various social media sites have claimed that Canalival, an unauthorised and antisocial event, will be taking place on the Regent’s Canal this weekend. We would like to make it clear that no application has been made to hold an event, either to Hackney Council or to us. Any such event would therefore be unauthorised and render organisers liable for public liability.

In May last year an unauthorised canal-based party known as Canalival, took place on the Regent's Canal in Hackney. The event created environmental destruction along the canal. Important wildlife habitats were destroyed, nests were damaged and there were high levels of anti-social behaviour.

The party-goers created loads of noise, left loads of litter and even defecated and urinated in residents' gardens and along the towpath.

We're all for people having a good time by the canal, as long as it's safe and doesn't have a negative impact on others.

This weekend we'll be installing fencing along this stretch of canal and working closely with Hackney Council and the Metropolitan Police to make sure this event doesn't go ahead. Action will be taken against those who attend.
