Canal & River Trust team cycle to Brussels

On 31 August a team of 19 intrepid cyclists, many of them Canal & River Trust employees, set off on an epic 300 mile sponsored cycle ride from Paddington to Brussels.

I really hope we’re going to do something similar again next because I would definitely want to take part!

The team’s aim, to raise money for the Canal & River Trust, has been well met with over £34,000 being raised so far. Thanks to the generosity of corporate sponsors, who covered the cost of the trip, every penny raised in sponsorship will go straight to the waterways, to build homes for wildlife, plant orchards and train volunteers to conserve and enhance their local canal.

The team set off from Sheldon Square, Paddington on Friday 31 August. That first day was, for many, the most challenging as it saw them cycle 91 miles. Day 2 ended at Amsterdam, day 3 at Breda and finally, day 4 saw the team arrive in Brussels.

The team spent much of their 4 day challenge cycling along towpaths, so it was home from home for those who either work for the Canal & River Trust or spend their leisure time by our treasured network of canals and rivers.

Anja Nettler of the Canal & River Trust said "There was a fantastic team spirit and I think everyone had a lot of fun. Quite a few said they felt like they could have got on their bikes again to cycle on. I really hope we’re going to do something similar again next because I would definitely want to take part!"

You can still donate to the team’s efforts at the JustGiving website. Please give generously and be one of the first supporters of our brand new charity as we seek to conserve and enhance our canals and rivers for the next 200 years.

You can also donate and fundraise for our 50 appeal projects across the country.
