Turnford and Cheshunt Pits SSSI

Turnford and Cheshunt Pits SSSI comprises ten former gravel pits that form part of the Lee Valley Special Protection Area. The site comprises a range of habitats from open water to areas of marsh, grassland, through to scrub and woodland. The pits support bittern and wintering gadwall and shoveler, for which the Lee Valley SPA is designated, along with a variety of other bird species including great crested grebe little ringed plover, sedge warbler and reed warbler. The site supports a variety of aquatic plants and invertebrates including beetles, grasshoppers and crickets, and fourteen species of dragonflies and damselflies, along with fan-leaved water crowfoot, flowering rush, and brown sedge.
