Fairer, stronger and more active communities

Engaging communities within their own local environment is a proven way to make a difference to peoples lives. At the Canal & River Trust we have a track record of successful projects which have made a lasting impression on local communties.

Birmingham Canals
Communities in Birmingham

Breaking down cultural barriers through our local canals and rivers, perhaps that sounds unlikely but that is exactly what has happened across England and Wales through engagement projects in communities adjacent to our waterways.

Neglect of the waterway environment sometimes stems from a lack of appreciation of what the canals and rivers can offer. We are working to help this understanding and appreciation through active participation, volunteering, work programmes or just social activities. In many areas we have strengthened community involvement in local waterways which in turn has helped communities themselves strengthen their own cross cultural links.

In the following pages you can read about some of the projects we are developing with partners.
